Internet Safety Issues

The following are guidelines for parents and guardians to help your children have positive experiences with the Internet and the World Wide Web.

Use the Internet as a family. Join your children in Internet exploration.
Explore the wide range of available information and tell your children about sites you consider inappropriate for them.
Encourage children to use sites recommended on the Library's "Cool Sites" page and counsel them to avoid sites you consider unsuitable.
Provide guidelines for your children on the amount of time they spend online, just as for television. The library does have a limit of 1 hour per day per patron.
Instruct children NEVER to give out personal information (name, address, password, telephone number, credit card numbers) online.
Teach children to be good online consumers. As with print information, consider the source, date, and accuracy of online information.

Families Connect This is a great site designed to teach families about the Internet. It includes on-line courses parents can take to teach themselves about the Internet	GetNetWise This site contains information Internet safety, description of filters, how to report on-line trouble, and guide to selected kids' sites.
Jon's Homeschool Resource Page This comprehensive homeschooling site includes a variety of information such as online discussion and support groups, vendors, and web resource pages.	Kids Connect Lots of information for parents about how they can utilize library resources when using the Internet with their kids including links to over 700 recommended sites.
SafeKids Safety on the Internet is the focus here, with copies of on-line safety pledges, information on filters, and links to filtered search engines.
